Quantum technology breakthroughs in battery charging and qubit error reduction

Researchers are making significant strides in quantum energy and computing hardware. A multinational team led by James Quach at CSIRO has successfully developed a prototype for a ‘quantum battery’. Utilizing the ‘superabsorption’ effect, the device can charge within a femtosecond scale by leveraging collective quantum states in an optical microcavity. While the current prototype faces limitations in energy capacity and extremely short discharge durations, the team is developing a hybrid architecture to combine quantum speed with classical storage stability.

In parallel, a research collaboration between the University of Surrey and Northwestern University has proposed a new qubit design called the ‘Superfluid Helium Oscillator Quantum’ (SHOQ). By using superfluid helium-3, which is charge-neutral, the design aims to be naturally immune to electromagnetic noise. Researchers predict this approach could reduce error rates by approximately one hundred times compared to current mainstream superconducting qubits, potentially facilitating the scaling of quantum computers.
