QuantumScape launches QS PowerBlock for AI data centers
QuantumScape has introduced the QS PowerBlock, a modular solid-state lithium-metal battery system designed for use in AI data center racks. The company showcased the technology at the OCP Global Summit in San Jose, appearing alongside partner Megmeet, which provides components for power supply systems.
The QS PowerBlock is designed to align with Open Compute Project (OCP) Open Rack V3 standards, targeting 800VDC in-rack energy storage for 1 MW AI racks. In controlled prototype testing, QuantumScape claims the system delivered four times the power density and five times the runtime of existing OCP benchmarks.
By targeting the high-demand infrastructure used by hyperscalers and cloud providers, QuantumScape is expanding its strategic focus beyond the automotive sector. While the announcement strengthens the company's case for non-automotive applications, analysts note that execution risks remain regarding the scaling of production and the transition from development to recurring revenue.
