QuantumScape plans 100 MWh solid-state battery production line

QuantumScape has announced plans to construct a 100 MWh solid-state battery production line, aiming to expand its technology applications beyond electric vehicles into sectors such as AI data centers, aerospace, and defense. To support this expansion, the company is partnering with the Muehlbauer Group, a German automation and manufacturing technology provider, which will supply cell assembly equipment and technical support.

Cell production at the new line is scheduled to begin in 2028. Currently, QuantumScape is validating its scalable manufacturing capabilities through the Eagle Line pilot production line in San Jose, California. This pilot line utilizes the company’s proprietary Cobra process to produce solid-state battery separators for customer sampling and testing.

The announcement follows the October launch of the QS PowerBlock, an in-rack energy storage system specifically designed for AI data centers. While the company's stock saw recent gains following the production plan and a narrower third-quarter loss, long-term share performance remains under pressure as investors monitor the transition from pilot projects to commercialization.
