QuantumScape shifts to licensing model amid battery production delays
QuantumScape has announced a significant strategic shift, moving from ambitions of large-scale solid-state battery manufacturing to a technology licensing model. This pivot follows difficulties in advancing technology to a point where full-scale commercial production is viable by 2026.
As part of this transition, the company is focusing on its automated pilot production line, known as the "Eagle Line," which is intended to double cell output in the second half of 2026. QuantumScape is also seeking to broaden its technology placement across the industry, citing partnerships with players such as Honda and revised agreements with Volkswagen's PowerCo.
Financial performance remains a concern for investors. The company reported a second-quarter net loss of $98.2 million and an adjusted EBITDA loss of $64.2 million. While customer billings rose to $10.8 million in the second quarter, the company continues to face high cash burn. In response to these developments, TD Cowen lowered its price target for QuantumScape from $8 to $6, maintaining a "Hold" rating.
