Quarry blast floods Gwaelod‑y‑Garth village in Wales

A planned blast at the nearby quarry—identified as Craig yr Hesg (operated by Heidelberg Materials) and also referred to as the Taffs Well Quarry run by Breedon Group—triggered a sudden surge of muddy water that flooded the village of Gwaelod‑y‑Garth, north Cardiff, on 30 July. Fifteen homes were affected, with thirteen evacuated by fire crews as water rushed through streets, destroying garden fences, doors and ground‑floor interiors.

Residents described the explosion as an "earthquake" and called for an immediate suspension of blasting until an investigation determines the cause. Welsh authorities, including Cabinet Minister for Local Government, Housing and Planning Siân Gwenllian, have launched an inquiry. The quarry operators have pledged to support affected families and cooperate with the investigation.
