Quebec cégeps see record enrollment growth for 2026
Quebec's public college network (cégeps) is experiencing unprecedented growth for the 2026 academic year. Preliminary data from the Fédération des cégeps shows a total of 200,635 students enrolled in regular instruction across the province's 48 institutions, representing a 3.3% increase from the previous year. This growth is widespread, with significant increases noted in regions such as Laval (+9.9%), Lanaudière (+7.6%), and Chaudière-Appalaches (+7.4%).
Marie Montpetit, CEO of the Fédération des cégeps, noted that while this growth is positive, it requires adequate resources to support student success and mental health.
At the regional level, the Cégep de Rimouski and its affiliates—including the Institut maritime du Québec and the Centre matapédien d’études collégiales—reported a combined enrollment of nearly 2,900 regular students, a rise of over 5% compared to last autumn. Director General Julie Gasse stated that this steady progression demonstrates that their programs meet both student aspirations and community needs. The institution expects this upward trend to continue for at least five years.
