Quebec election: PQ gains momentum as CAQ support declines
As the Quebec provincial election approaches on October 5, recent polling indicates a significant shift in political momentum. The Parti Québécois (PQ) has seen a surge in support, with some models suggesting the party is on the cusp of securing a majority government. In contrast, the governing Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) has experienced a sharp decline, with some polls placing the party in fourth place among decided voters.
Election platforms are centering on healthcare, cost of living, and public safety. The PQ has proposed measures such as an affordable $95 monthly mobility pass, increased funding for home care, and hiring 800 new police officers. Québec solidaire has focused on mental health, proposing multidisciplinary teams at CLSCs to provide immediate support. Meanwhile, debates have highlighted disagreements over economic management, the state of public services, and the constitutional future of the province.
Advance polling is currently underway, with voters having until September 28 to cast ballots before the official election day. The election will take place under a new map featuring 127 electoral divisions.
