Quebec election: Parties propose new Indigenous relations policies
During the 35th day of the Quebec election campaign, political parties focused on Indigenous relations and the abolition of the lieutenant-governor position, coinciding with the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
The Parti québécois (PQ) pledged to implement Indigenous language and culture courses in primary and secondary schools. The party also proposed creating a ‘Maison des savoirs’, intended to be the first university-level institution run by and for Indigenous peoples, following consultations with First Nations and Inuit communities.
Éric Duhaime, leader of the Conservative Party of Quebec (PCQ), committed to increasing autonomy for Indigenous nations, specifically regarding youth protection. The PCQ proposes granting Indigenous nations voting seats at regional decision-making tables and collaborating on the creation of Indigenous-led protected areas.
Additionally, Ruba Ghazal, spokesperson for Québec solidaire (QS), advocated for making September 30 a public holiday.
