Parti Québécois wins Quebec election, plans future independence referendum

The Parti Québécois (PQ), a secessionist party, has won the Quebec provincial election, marking a significant political shift in the French-speaking Canadian province. Led by Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, the party secured 59 seats in the 127-seat National Assembly, allowing it to form a minority government. This victory ends eight years of rule by the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ), which suffered a major defeat, losing all its previously held seats.

As part of its platform, the PQ has promised to hold a referendum on Quebec's independence from Canada. However, St-Pierre Plamondon stated that such a referendum would not be conducted until after the term of U.S. President Donald Trump concludes, likely in 2029 or 2030, citing the need for a stable international environment for such a decision.

The election results also saw shifts for other parties: the Quebec Liberal Party increased its presence to 40 seats, while the Conservative Party of Quebec and Québec Solidaire also gained representation. Christine Fréchette, the outgoing leader of the CAQ, has resigned from her leadership role following the party's collapse in the polls.
