Quebec governing party names Trump its primary election adversary

The Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ), the governing party of Quebec, has launched its election campaign for the October 5 vote to renew the National Assembly. Party leader Christine Fréchette has identified U.S. President Donald Trump as the campaign's primary adversary, citing the economic impact of his trade policies and tariffs on Quebec's industrial sectors.

Fréchette stated that her administration is best equipped to protect local workers and businesses from the economic uncertainty stemming from the United States. The political landscape is further complicated by Trump's rhetoric regarding Canada becoming the '51st state,' which has reignited debates over Quebec's sovereignty.

In response, Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, leader of the separatist Parti Québécois, has pledged to hold an independence referendum if his party forms a government. However, he noted that he would not pursue such a referendum while Trump is in office, arguing that the province should decide its future without the instability caused by the U.S. administration.
