Quebec government announces $28 million for homelessness emergency aid
Quebec Premier Paul St-Pierre Plamondon has announced $28 million in emergency funding to support community organizations assisting people experiencing homelessness. This one-time allocation is intended to fund 200 projects across 16 regions of Quebec to implement winter emergency measures.
Approximately $18 million of the total is earmarked for the Montreal metropolitan area. The government expects this funding to create more than 1,000 emergency spaces over the next five months, including additional warming centers, emergency shelters, and transitional housing. The funds will also cover facility costs, meals, and outreach services.
In the Outaouais region, $1.8 million will be allocated to support local winter plans, including warming centers and increased resources. While local officials and health institutions have welcomed the announcement as a positive step, some regional collectives are calling for permanent funding solutions rather than just one-time emergency aid. The Premier has committed to holding a major summit on homelessness in early 2027 to address long-term solutions.
