Quebec health officials report surge in Lyme disease cases and declare measles outbreak over

Public health data show that 27 cases of Lyme disease were recorded in the Mauricie‑Centre‑du‑Québec region up to 4 August 2026, more than double the 12 cases reported at the same point in 2025. The increase is linked to expanding tick habitats as temperatures rise, with the first infections reported in Drummondville and Odanak. Health experts advise protective clothing, careful tick removal and prompt consultation with a pharmacist for preventive treatment.

The province’s latest measles outbreak has been declared finished after 28 confirmed cases. The final case occurred on 1 July, and the required 32‑day period without new infections has now elapsed. This was the fourth measles outbreak in Quebec since 2024, contributing to a national total of 130 cases across the four events. Canadian officials continue to stress vaccination as the primary defence against the highly contagious virus.
