Quebec implements new ticket resale and subscription rules
New consumer protection regulations in Quebec took effect on September 12, 2026, introducing stricter rules for ticket resale and online subscriptions.
Under the new ticket resale laws, tickets generally cannot be resold to Quebec consumers for more than the price announced by the authorized vendor. However, an exception exists: resale above the price cap is permitted if the event producer and presenter provide prior written consent and the maximum resale price is disclosed to the buyer. This allows event rights-holders to control which marketplaces can facilitate higher-priced transactions.
Resale platforms must also provide increased transparency by disclosing the ticket’s original value, the nature of all fees, and the official box office price. Additionally, websites must notify users if tickets may be available for less through official channels.
The regulations also target online subscriptions, such as streaming services and mobile plans. Businesses are now required to provide an easily accessible cancellation button for online services. Furthermore, companies must provide written notice two to ten days before a temporary subscription discount expires, clearly stating the regular price and the date the change takes effect.
