Quebec launches provincial election campaign for October 5 vote

The Quebec provincial election campaign has officially launched following the dissolution of the National Assembly by Lieutenant Governor Manon Jeannotte, at the request of Premier Christine Fréchette. The general election is scheduled for October 5, 2026, and will determine the 127 members of the province's 44th legislature.

This election cycle is notable for the implementation of a new electoral map consisting of 127 ridings. This redistribution has resulted in changes to several constituencies, such as Portneuf, which has seen its electorate increase from 45,005 to 55,911, and the movement of Coteau-du-Lac from the Soulanges riding to Beauharnois.

Élections Québec, led by Director General Jean-François Blanchet, is managing the process for approximately 6.4 million registered voters. Key upcoming deadlines include the candidate filing deadline on September 17 and the period for modifying voter lists ending October 1. The electoral body expects to hire and train over 60,000 people to support the voting process, which includes advance polling on September 27 and 28.
