Quebec political leaders clash over immigration and shale gas

Quebec political leaders are facing scrutiny over recent policy stances and public statements. Dulce Vivar, a Québec solidaire candidate for Charlevoix–Côte-Beaupré, has criticized Parti Québécois leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon for linking school overcrowding to immigration. Vivar, an immigrant herself, stated that such rhetoric “has no place in politics” and urged voters to consider the context of his remarks.

Separately, Paul St-Pierre Plamondon has challenged Conservative leader Éric Duhaime to reopen the debate on shale gas exploitation. This follows Duhaime’s proposal to lift the current ban on hydrocarbons in Quebec, arguing that Utica shale gas could generate $9.4 billion in revenue and support 6,000 jobs. St-Pierre Plamondon countered by citing concerns over groundwater contamination and public health, questioning how voters in the Bellechasse region would react to increased drilling.
