Quebec provincial election: Parti Québécois leads polls

Quebec voters are heading to the polls for a provincial election that could significantly reshape the province's political landscape. The Parti Québécois (PQ), led by Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, has emerged as the frontrunner in recent polling, leading the race with approximately 29% to 30% of the vote. This surge comes at the expense of the governing Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ), which has seen its support decline to around 14% to 15%.

A central issue in the campaign is the prospect of a third sovereignty referendum. St-Pierre Plamondon has pledged to organize a referendum on Quebec's independence if his party forms a government, though he has stated this would not occur until after the conclusion of Donald Trump's U.S. presidency in January 2029.

Other major parties include the Quebec Liberals, the Quebec Conservatives, and Québec solidaire, all of which are expected to win seats. The Quebec Conservatives, led by Éric Duhaime, are projected to make significant gains, particularly in the Quebec City region. The election follows a period of economic uncertainty and high cost of living, which have been dominant themes throughout the campaign.
