Quebec election campaign intensifies ahead of first leaders' debate

The Quebec provincial election campaign is entering its decisive phase ahead of the October 5, 2026, vote. Political leaders are preparing for their first major televised debate on Tuesday, covering critical issues such as the economy, taxation, and the future of the province.

Party platforms have begun to diverge significantly on fiscal management. The Parti Québécois (PQ) has pledged to balance the provincial budget by 2028-2029 through a $6.6-billion reduction in spending and a 2.5% reduction in the total public sector payroll. Meanwhile, the Quebec Liberal Party (PLQ) aims for a balanced budget by 2029-2030, proposing a $12-billion framework that includes reforming the state and managing potential economic volatility from international trade tensions.

Other key campaign promises include the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) focusing on local alcohol production, the PQ proposing audits of government IT projects to enhance digital sovereignty, and the PLQ committing to expanding childcare places and parental insurance benefits. Current polling indicates the PQ leads with 29%, followed by the PLQ at 23% and the CAQ at 21%.
