Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette resigns after CAQ election loss
Christine Fréchette has stepped down as leader of the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) following a significant electoral defeat. The party, which had held power in Quebec for eight years and previously held 79 seats, failed to win any seats in the recent election, securing only 13 per cent of the vote compared to 40 per cent in 2022.
The Parti Québécois capitalized on a desire for political change, winning enough seats to form a minority government in a fractured landscape where no single party surpassed 28 per cent of the vote. Fréchette had assumed leadership of the CAQ in April, succeeding founder François Legault.
Former Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne commented on the results, drawing parallels between Fréchette and herself regarding the ‘glass cliff’ phenomenon. Wynne suggested that women in Canadian politics are often placed in leadership positions during periods of high risk or unpopularity, making the likelihood of failure greater.
