Quebec Premier Paul St-Pierre Plamondon forms new Cabinet

Quebec Premier Paul St-Pierre Plamondon has sworn in his new Council of Ministers, featuring a streamlined Cabinet of 22 ministers. This reduction from the typical thirty members is intended to signal a policy of state frugality amid announced government spending cuts.

The new Cabinet includes several political newcomers, as 50 of the 60 Parti Québécois elected officials have not previously served in Quebec City. Only Pascal Bérubé and Nicolas Marceau have prior ministerial experience. Due to the smaller number of seats, ministers have been assigned multiple, sometimes unrelated, portfolios. For example, Elsie Lefebvre will oversee Higher Education, Housing, and the Status of Women.

Pascal Bérubé has been appointed Minister of Culture, Heritage, Communications, and French Language, as well as Minister Delegate for the Bas-Saint-Laurent region. Yohann St-Pierre, the Member for Rimouski, expressed support for the new administration and the regional representation of Eastern Quebec, reaffirming his commitment to local priorities such as the extension of Highway 20 and improved healthcare services in Rimouski.
