Quebec provincial election: 908 candidates registered

Élections Québec has announced that 908 candidacies have been accepted across the province's 127 constituencies for the upcoming October 5 election. This represents an increase from the 880 candidates who ran in the 2022 election. On average, there are seven candidates per constituency, though the Verdun riding features the highest number with 13 candidates.

Twenty-one political parties are represented, including several smaller groups such as the Parti communiste du Québec, the Parti marxiste-léniniste du Québec, and the Parti nul. Additionally, 19 independent candidates are running. Women account for 43% of the total candidacies, matching the percentage seen in 2022.

Due to a new provision in the Electoral Act that came into effect on July 1, political parties must present at least two candidacies during a general election to maintain their authorization. Consequently, the Chief Electoral Officer has withdrawn the authorization of the Parti populaire du Québec, which presented zero candidates.
