Quebec students protest lack of political representation
Hundreds of students and activists gathered in Montreal and Quebec to protest against the lack of political representation for their interests, two days before a general election. Organized by the Coalition de résistance pour l’unité étudiante syndicale (CRUES), which represents 30,000 members, the demonstrators marched under the slogan “Élections, piège à cons” (Elections are a trap for fools).
Protesters expressed frustration with major political parties, citing concerns over potential education funding cuts, austerity measures, and the rising cost of living. Sophie Bouchard, CRUES head of internal affairs, stated that the protest aimed to encourage direct action, such as strikes, as a more effective lever for change than voting every four years.
Economic disparities were a central theme, with organizers noting that current student financial aid is insufficient for survival. Data cited indicates that while a single person in Montreal requires approximately $41,585 annually to live with dignity, the Ministry of Higher Education recognizes only $1,416 per month for full-time students living away from parents.
