Quebec tourism industry reacts to absence of dedicated minister

Tourism organizations in Quebec, including Tourisme Gaspésie and Tourisme Charlevoix, have expressed significant concern following the government's decision not to appoint a minister specifically dedicated to tourism. Under the new cabinet structure, tourism responsibilities have been integrated into the Ministry of Economic Development, Innovation, and Energy, led by Stéphane Paquet.

Representatives from the industry have described the move as a shock. Mitchell Dion, Director General of Tourisme Charlevoix, stated he was “astounded” and questioned whether tourism remains a government priority. Similarly, Stéphanie Thibaud, Director General of Tourisme Gaspésie, emphasized the need for a strong voice within the government to represent regional realities and ensure the industry remains a priority.

Tourism is a vital economic driver for the province, representing approximately 10,000 businesses and serving as Quebec's fourth-largest export sector. In the Gaspésie region alone, the industry generates roughly $613.5 million in economic benefits from nearly 950,000 visitors.
