Quebecers support right to cooling during heat waves

A new Léger poll reveals that 74% of Quebecers support the recognition of a ‘right to coolness,’ which would guarantee access to safe environments during extreme heat episodes. The survey, commissioned by the Association pour la santé publique du Québec (ASPQ), highlights growing public concern regarding heat-related health risks.

According to the data, 64% of respondents reported experiencing at least one side effect of extreme heat over the past three years, such as headaches, sleep disturbances, or breathing difficulties. The ASPQ is urging political parties to include heatwave mitigation measures in their upcoming election platforms.

The urgency of the issue is underscored by figures from the Institut national de santé publique du Québec (INSPQ), which estimated that 628 deaths in the province were attributable to heat during the summer of 2025. Additionally, 48% of those surveyed indicated they would be more likely to vote for a party that offers concrete plans to address heat waves in the October provincial election.
