Queen Amanirenas led Kushite resistance against the Roman Empire

Queen Amanirenas, a ruler of the Kingdom of Kush, led a significant resistance against the expansion of the Roman Empire during the late first century BCE. Located in what is now northern Sudan, the Kingdom of Kush maintained sophisticated political, military, and trading institutions long before the era of the Atlantic slave trades.

Following the Roman annexation of Egypt, Amanirenas initiated military campaigns around 25 BCE, advancing into Roman-controlled territory and attacking settlements such as Syene. During these conflicts, Kushite forces seized symbols of Roman authority, including a bronze head of Emperor Augustus, which was later discovered buried beneath a temple entrance in Meroë. The Roman Empire eventually retaliated under the prefect Gaius Petronius, leading to the capture of territories including Napata.
