Queen Elizabeth II opens Sydney Opera House in 1973
On October 20, 1973, Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the Sydney Opera House in the presence of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and Australian politicians. Despite strong winds during the ceremony, the event was marked by thousands of spectators at the harbor, tens of thousands of balloons, sirens from boats, and fireworks.
The landmark building was designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon following an international competition. Construction began on March 2, 1959, with an initial budget of 7 million Australian dollars. However, due to complex engineering challenges and political disputes, the final cost rose to 102 million Australian dollars by its completion. Utzon left the project in 1966, and the final stages were completed by an Australian architectural team led by Peter Hall.
Prior to the royal gala, the complex hosted its first public opera production, Prokofiev’s ‘War and Peace’, on September 28, 1973. The official celebrations included musical works by Beethoven and Mozart. In her speech, the Queen acknowledged the difficulties faced during construction but noted that the Opera House had captured the world's imagination.
