Princess Leonor performs first solo royal engagement in Oviedo
Princess Leonor, the Spanish heir to the throne, is marking a significant milestone in her public role by undertaking her first official solo engagement. During the Princess of Asturias Awards in Oviedo, the 20-year-old will host a reception for award recipients at the Hotel Reconquista without the presence of King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, or Infanta Sofía.
This move is part of a planned, gradual transition by King Felipe VI to grant his daughter more responsibility as the honorary president of the Princess of Asturias Foundation. While the entire royal family appeared together for the 34th Princess of Asturias Awards Concert on October 22, the upcoming solo duties represent a shift toward Leonor taking a more central role in state functions.
The awards, often compared to the Nobel Prize, recognize outstanding achievements in fields such as art, literature, and research. This year's ceremony includes high-profile recipients such as Lionel Messi and Patti Smith.
