Queen Letizia calls for increased funding for cancer research

During the tenth anniversary of World Cancer Research Day in Brussels, Queen Letizia and the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) called for increased, stable, and sustained funding for oncological research.

Participating in a forum at the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) headquarters, Queen Letizia emphasized that scientific progress must translate into tangible improvements for patients. She noted that cancer research “does not have the luxury of time” and requires continuous investment and cross-sector cooperation.

Ramón Reyes, president of the AECC and the Scientific Foundation, echoed these calls, stating that Europe must prioritize cancer research as a strategic health issue to ensure competitiveness and health equity. He argued that research continuity should be protected so that no citizen is left behind due to their geographic location. The AECC also launched a new campaign, ‘Research with Impact: Research Projects that Drive Life Projects,’ to demonstrate how current scientific advancements directly improve patient survival and quality of life.
