Queen Letizia heads Cervantes Institute directors' meeting in Jerez
Queen Letizia presided over the Instituto Cervantes’s annual meeting of directors at the Atalaya Museums in Jerez de la Frontera. More than one hundred directors from centres operating in over 50 countries gathered for the event.
Flamenco singers La Macanita and Sordera performed, while the programme highlighted poet José Manuel Caballero Bonald and the upcoming centenary of his birth. Jerez mayor María José García‑Pelayo described the city as a reference point for Spanish culture and the gastronomic capital for 2026.
Luis García Montero likened the gathering to a “great editorial board”, and the Cervantes Institute director spoke of the Spanish language as a “code open of cooperation and development”, stressing digital transformation and its global role. Andalusian president Juan Manuel Moreno reaffirmed the region’s importance for the language and noted preparations for the Generation of ’27 centennial in 2027.
