Norwegian Royal Family announces period of limited official activity

The Norwegian Royal Court has announced that Queen Mette-Marit will not undertake any official engagements until the summer of 2027. This hiatus is due to her ongoing rehabilitation following a successful lung transplant performed in June.

The announcement comes as the royal family navigates a period of transition following the death of King Harald. King Haakon VIII will continue his duties, focusing on themes such as democracy, the environment, economy, and defense, though the palace noted that no major international trips or state visits are planned for the autumn and winter.

Further complicating the royal schedule, Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra is set to return to Australia in February 2027 to continue her studies at the University of Sydney. While she will participate in select official events before her departure, her absence will contribute to a period of limited personnel within the monarchy. Consequently, Queen Sonja, the widow of King Harald, will take on a more prominent role in representing the royal house and performing official duties during this time.
