Queen Mothers demand greater role in Greater Accra traditional leadership

Queen Mothers from across the Greater Accra Region have called for increased inclusion in traditional decision-making and deliberations regarding chieftaincy conflicts. During a landmark engagement hosted by the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs at the Guggisberg Memorial Hall in Dodowa, leaders discussed peace, women’s empowerment, and community development.

King Professor Odaifio Welentsi, President of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, stated that empowering Queen Mothers is essential for good governance, social cohesion, and socio-economic development. While noting Ghana’s progress through the Affirmative Action (Gender Equality) Act, he highlighted that women remain under-represented at the local level.

Additionally, Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Rita Naa Odoley Sowah urged Queen Mothers to lead efforts in ensuring peaceful Homowo celebrations. This follows a tragic incident during last year’s festivities where six lives were lost in the Teshie and Sowutuom-Anyaa areas.
