Queen Máxima visits Achterhoek to promote biobased construction

Queen Máxima and Minister Eleanor Boekholt O'Sullivan conducted a working visit to the Achterhoek region in the Netherlands to observe biobased construction practices. The visit included harvesting fiber hemp, inspecting new housing developments, and visiting a sustainable wooden school in Doetinchem.

Biobased construction utilizes renewable materials from nature, such as wood, flax, hemp, straw, and cork, to serve as building components or insulation. Unlike traditional materials like concrete and steel, these organic materials sequester CO2 during their growth, providing a climate-friendly alternative. The initiative aims to bridge the agricultural and construction sectors by allowing farmers to supply raw materials for housing.

During the visit to the Vrije School De Kleine Prins, the Queen discussed sustainability with students and local officials. Residents of a nearby sustainable housing development noted that their energy bills are significantly lower, which the Queen noted has a positive impact on “the affordability of life.” The Dutch government holds an ambition that by 2030, at least 30 percent of new homes should consist of at least 30 percent biobased materials.
