New York Governor warns of price hikes amid US-Canada trade war
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has warned that an escalating trade war between the United States and Canada could lead to significantly higher prices for essential goods. This warning follows President Donald Trump’s decision to impose 50% tariffs on billions of dollars in Canadian imports, alongside planned increases on automotive parts and vehicles starting in 2027.
Hochul noted that the economic relationship between New York and Canada is particularly tight, meaning the tariffs could drive up costs for food, dairy, gasoline, and energy. Citing an analysis from Yale University’s Budget Lab, the Governor estimated that New York families could face an average cumulative cost of approximately $1,751 per household.
In response to the tariffs, the Canadian government has announced equivalent measures and support programs for affected workers and businesses, set to take effect on September 8. Dominican residents in New York, a community of nearly one million people, have been advised to take precautionary measures in light of these economic shifts.
