Queens man charged with hate crimes following fatal hit-and-run

Dawood Faisal, 22, has been indicted on hate crime charges in Queens, New York, following the alleged vandalism of a Jewish-owned bagel shop. The indictment comes as Faisal is already facing manslaughter charges related to a fatal hit-and-run incident that occurred on May 25.

Prosecutors allege that Faisal vandalized Bagels & Co., a kosher shop displaying Israeli flags, on two separate occasions in May. During the first incident on May 15, he allegedly knocked over metal plant stands and threw dirt at the building. He reportedly returned on May 23 to further damage the shop by kicking plant stands and uprooting greenery.

Two days after the second vandalism, Faisal allegedly drove a Toyota Prius at 75 mph in a 35 mph zone, ran a red light, and struck a couple walking near their home in Hollis Hills. The collision killed 71-year-old Cara Trager and injured her husband, Michael Trager. Faisal fled the scene but was later apprehended after crashing the vehicle.
