Queen’s University Belfast develops 3D-printed patch for skin cancer drugs
Researchers at Queen’s University Belfast have developed a dissolvable, 3D-printed microneedle patch designed to deliver anti-cancer drugs directly to skin tumors. The patch utilizes curcumin and 5-fluorouracil, which are mixed into a printable resin to create needles fine enough to penetrate the skin's outer layer without drawing blood.
This method offers a minimally invasive alternative to traditional topical applications or more invasive procedures. The 3D-printed design allows for a controlled, two-stage drug release that can be customized to individual patients. Additionally, because the needles dissolve upon application, the technology may reduce the risk of needle-stick injuries and decrease medical sharps waste.
