Queen’s University Belfast researchers develop 3D-printed skin cancer patch

Researchers at Queen’s University Belfast have developed a dissolvable 3D-printed microneedle patch designed to improve the treatment of localized skin cancer. The patch utilizes a one-step 3D-printing technique that incorporates anti-cancer compounds, specifically curcumin and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), directly into the printable resin during manufacturing.

The patch features tiny microneedles that penetrate the outermost layer of the skin without causing significant bleeding or requiring removal. Once applied, the needles gradually dissolve, releasing medication directly into the affected area. This method aims to provide a more targeted alternative to conventional topical medicines and invasive injections, potentially reducing patient discomfort, anxiety, and the need for repeated applications.

Professor Dimitrios A. Lamprou, Chair of Biofabrication and Advanced Manufacturing, noted that the dissolving nature of the microneedles could also reduce the risk of accidental needle-stick injuries and decrease medical sharps waste.
