Queensland construction sector sees massive growth and $174 billion pipeline

Queensland is experiencing a significant surge in construction activity, highlighted by a new $174 billion development pipeline and a leading rate of residential building. A newly launched Queensland Construction Portal, developed by the Brisbane Economic Development Agency (BEDA) and the Property Council of Australia, has mapped over 617 major projects valued at $50 million or more.

The data indicates an intense period of activity through 2029-30, raising concerns regarding workforce and material availability. By 2026-27, major projects are expected to require nearly 60,000 workers and significant quantities of concrete, steel, and glass.

In the residential sector, Queensland leads Australia with more than 52,000 homes currently under construction, representing a 35.6 percent increase over the last two years. The state government attributes this growth to land activation programs, such as the Residential Activation Fund, and initiatives aimed at streamlining approvals and reducing red tape.
