Queensland courts hand down rulings in two separate criminal cases

The High Court of Australia overturned a reduced sentence for the teenager who murdered British expatriate Emma Lovell in Brisbane. The offender, who was 17 at the time of the 2022 stabbing, will now serve a 14‑year term with a minimum of 60% of the sentence, after the court ruled the earlier appeal was not permissible. Emma Lovell's husband, Lee, said the decision offered some validation for the family.

In a separate case, a 70‑year‑old woman from Forest Lake was charged with murder after the death of 56‑year‑old Isaac Oar, a man with Down syndrome who was found severely malnourished and weighing only 29 kg at a home in Ayr, North Queensland. Police said Oar had not received professional medical care for over a decade, and detectives described the circumstances as a prolonged neglect case. The woman is due to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court.
