Queensland driver fined for steering with knees while buttering bagel

A 29-year-old driver in Newtown, Queensland, has been fined after being observed steering a vehicle with his knees while buttering a bagel. The incident occurred on September 7, 2026, and was captured on body camera footage by the Queensland Police Service (QPS).

The driver, who was operating a silver Honda HR-V, was initially pulled over because his vehicle registration had expired on September 4. During the stop, officers observed the distracted driving behavior. The driver was issued a fine totaling $1,104 and received three demerit points.

While Queensland does not have a specific law against eating while driving, the driver was charged with driving without due care and attention. Acting Superintendent Kelly Hanlen of the Darling Downs District emphasized that taking focus away from driving for food preparation can have serious consequences for road safety.
