Queensland expands gas exploration and power generation tenders

Energy activity in Queensland is increasing through both resource exploration and new infrastructure procurement. Onshore gas exploration is accelerating, with companies such as Omega Oil & Gas, Elixir Energy, and Denison Gas reporting significant drilling results and discoveries in the Taroom Trough and Bowen Basin. This increased activity comes as global LNG supply has been reduced by approximately 20% due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, driving up Asian spot prices.

Simultaneously, the Queensland government has shortlisted four companies to develop 400 megawatts of new gas-fired power station capacity in central Queensland by 2032. The shortlist includes AGL, APA Group, Quinbrook, and Anza Power. Treasurer and Energy Minister David Janetzki stated that the tender process, which saw bids for 4 gigawatts of projects, demonstrates that the state is open for investment to ensure affordable and reliable energy security.
