The 2026 National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) results released by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) show mixed outcomes. Numeracy scores for Years 5, 7 and 9 reached their highest levels since the 2023 redesign, with about 29,000 more students placed in the “Exceeding” band and roughly 1,600 fewer in the “Needs additional support” band compared with 2023. Indigenous students also improved, with a higher share exceeding numeracy standards in Years 7 and 9.
In contrast, reading and writing performance slipped. National reading scores for Years 5, 7 and 9 fell relative to 2025, and one‑third of Australian students overall failed to meet the minimum literacy and numeracy benchmarks. Year 3 mathematics results were described as “clearly concerning”, with about one‑third of Year 3 pupils nationally classified as “developing” or “needs additional support”.
Education Minister Jason Clare and ACARA chief executive Stephen Gniel said the government will respond with a range of measures, including a national Year 1 numeracy check, a review of the Foundation‑to‑Year 2 mathematics curriculum, and targeted support for regional, remote and low‑socio‑economic schools.
