Queensland floods lead to one death and six camper rescues

Severe flooding and wild weather in Queensland have resulted in the death of one man and the rescue of six campers. Emergency services were called to Smothering Creek in the Fraser Coast region on Monday morning after a man was found unresponsive in floodwaters. Queensland Police are investigating the circumstances of the death and will prepare a report for the Coroner.

In a separate incident in Leyburn, near Toowoomba, six campers—comprising three men and three women aged between 26 and 71—were trapped at a public campground on Tullamaville Road after rising waters surrounded their site overnight. Queensland Fire and Rescue swiftwater crews successfully rescued all six individuals by late morning; no injuries were reported among the group.

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned of continued severe thunderstorms and the potential for renewed flash flooding across southern and central Queensland, as well as parts of New South Wales. Authorities are urging residents to avoid driving through floodwaters and to obey all road closure signs.
