Queensland Forensic Science Lab Scandal Prompts Whistleblower’s Resignation

Forensic scientist Dr. Kirsty Wright, hired by Queensland’s LNP government to overhaul the state’s forensic DNA laboratory, resigned in May, halfway through a 12‑month contract. Wright said she would still help the government if needed, emphasizing her priority to fix the lab.

The resignation comes as the government reviews all DNA statements issued over the past three years after errors were uncovered. Attorney‑General Deb Frecklington and FSQ director Mick Fuller said 904 statements are being checked, with about 10‑15% of the 300 already reviewed containing mistakes that could affect serious crimes such as murder and rape. While Frecklington initially claimed no victims were harmed, Fuller cautioned that the impact could not be ruled out.
