Queensland Government unveils $487 million waste‑reduction and recycling fund
The Queensland Government announced a five‑year, A$487 million Waste Reduction and Recycling Activation Fund as part of its “Less Landfill, More Recycling 2035” plan. The funding aims to expand resource‑recovery infrastructure across metropolitan, regional and remote areas, support councils and industry, and create jobs while reducing waste sent to landfill.
Key allocations include a A$40 million increase to the Resource Recovery Boost Fund (raising it to A$170 million), A$55 million for a Kerbside Bin Activation Fund, A$17.7 million for the Fighting Illegal Dumping Partnership Program, A$12.5 million for a Residual Waste Fund, A$18.5 million for a Recycle Wise Education Fund, A$11.7 million for a Waste Technology and Innovation Fund, A$2 million for the Statewide Recycling Infrastructure Plan and A$11 million for a Regional Recycling Transport Fund. The package supplements the A$488 million annual payments already made to councils to offset waste‑levy costs. Environment and Tourism Minister Andrew Powell said the government will partner with councils and industry rather than build facilities itself, removing barriers and backing practical projects that keep material out of landfill.
