Queensland launches freight delivery plan to boost rail productivity
The Queensland government has introduced the Queensland Freight Delivery Plan 2026, a strategic roadmap designed to enhance freight productivity, reliability, and safety across the state. The plan addresses a projected 20 per cent increase in the state’s freight task by 2032.
Key initiatives within the 70-action plan include the Rail Freight Container Incentive Scheme, which offers eligible customers rebates of up to 50 per cent on below-rail access charges for additional container freight on the North Coast Line, Mount Isa Line, and Southern Queensland systems. The plan also provides discounted diesel fuel access charges on the Mount Isa Line and includes a 10 per cent subsidy for all customers on that line.
The Australasian Railway Association (ARA) has welcomed the plan, noting its focus on making rail a more competitive option for freight customers. The strategy involves investments in road, rail, and marine infrastructure, as well as the development of new open-access intermodal freight facilities, specifically targeting the Mount Isa Line and the Port of Townsville.
