Queensland launches road safety initiatives and highway upgrades

Queensland is implementing a dual approach to road safety involving both infrastructure improvements and increased police enforcement.

In Maryborough, construction has begun on a major upgrade to the Bruce Highway-Walker Street intersection. The project will replace the existing intersection with a dual-lane, four-leg roundabout to improve traffic flow for local motorists and commercial freight. The work is expected to be completed by 2028.

Simultaneously, the Queensland Police Service has launched the ‘Ride with Me’ video series for Motorcycle Awareness Month to address rising fatalities. Data shows that 63 motorcyclists have died on Queensland roads between January 1 and October 1, 2026, an increase of 15 compared to the previous year. While motorcycles represent about one in 20 registered vehicles, they account for nearly one in four road fatalities in the state. Additionally, police enforcement through Operation Spring Break has detected over 13,400 traffic offences, including more than 6,800 speeding violations.
