Queensland local governments prioritize flood resilience and disaster planning
Local government representatives in Queensland are focusing on disaster preparedness and community resilience following significant flood events.
In Ipswich, Councillor Marnie Doyle has advocated for using lessons from the $741 million Resilient Homes Fund to guide future urban expansion and planning. An independent evaluation of the fund, conducted by researchers from the University of Queensland and the University of Melbourne, examined how the program improved flood-risk awareness and community recovery. The fund was established after the 2021-22 Southern Queensland floods, which caused approximately $7.7 billion in damages.
Meanwhile, the Mareeba Shire Council is launching a consultation process to develop Community Resilience Plans. Mayor Angela Toppin is inviting residents and business owners to participate in workshops and pop-up sessions to identify local hazards, improve communication networks, and strengthen disaster preparedness across the region.
