Queensland parliament pays tribute to former minister Vince Lester

The Queensland parliament has held tributes for former Bjelke-Petersen cabinet minister Vince Lester, who passed away in August at the age of 87. Lester served as a National Party MP for Central Queensland seats, including Belyando, Peak Downs, and Keppel, from 1974 to 2004.

Premier David Crisafulli described Lester as a “unique” and “colourful” grassroots parliamentarian. Lester was noted for his practical advocacy, including campaigning for building laws that required toilet doors to swing outwards to ensure emergency access during medical crises. He was also credited with championing the use of reflectorised number plates.

Other officials, including Treasurer David Janetzki and Minister Ann Leahy, highlighted his distinctive personality and his background as a baker. Katter Party MP Shane Knuth also noted the respect Lester commanded, mentioning that Bob Katter held the former minister in high regard.
