Queensland Police curb drink‑driving and seize drugs in Far North
Operation Yankee Surplus, a high‑visibility police initiative launched in May 2026, targeted dangerous driving in the Far North Queensland region. Between 24‑25 July, officers conducted static roadside checks in Kuranda and Cairns, issuing 8,675 breath tests and 200 traffic infringement notices. They identified 69 drink drivers and 35 drug drivers, charging 60 people with 88 offences ranging from unlawful vehicle use to assault. Chief Superintendent Kevin Fitzgibbon warned that the number of intoxicated drivers was “extremely concerning” and said the operation aims to reduce road trauma and disrupt stolen‑vehicle crime.
In parallel, the Tablelands Property Crime Squad and Criminal Investigation Branch executed search warrants in Tolga, Ravenshoe and nearby towns. A 40‑year‑old man in Tolga was found with methamphetamine crystals and a larger quantity in his pants; a 22‑year‑old Atherton woman faced similar charges. In Ravenshoe police seized cannabis, a bong, electronic scales and methamphetamine, leading to charges against a 35‑year‑old woman and a 36‑year‑old man. All defendants are scheduled to appear in local magistrates courts in August and October.
