Queensland Police Service members honored for bravery and service

Members of the Queensland Police Service were honored for their bravery, dedication, and service during recent ceremonies in the Mackay Whitsunday and Sunshine Coast districts.

In the Mackay Whitsunday District, 73 members received more than 100 medals and certificates. Senior Sergeant Mitch Benson was awarded the Queensland Police Valour Medal for his actions during the 2019 fires, where he assisted in evacuating residents under life-threatening conditions involving heavy smoke and rapidly spreading flames.

In the Sunshine Coast District, over 130 members were recognized with various honors, including the National Medal and the Blue Heart Medal. The Blue Heart Medals were awarded to the families of late Senior Constable Shayne Gill and late Constable Les McCosh, who died in the line of duty, as well as to officers who sustained life-changing injuries while performing their duties. Detective Senior Constable Katie Tomlins received the Russell Sheehan Memorial Award for her professionalism and work ethic.
