Queensland researchers introduce faster genetic testing for cancer and immune conditions

Scientists in Queensland have introduced new laboratory technologies and testing models designed to significantly accelerate the diagnosis of serious medical conditions.

Through the implementation of the Multi-physics Automated Reconfigurable Separation (MARS®) system, Pathology Queensland is now able to detect signs of multiple myeloma up to three times faster. This technology assists laboratory teams in isolating and analyzing plasma cells to identify genetic abnormalities, a process that has already benefited more than 100 patients. The system is expected to improve testing reliability, particularly for patients in regional communities whose samples must travel long distances.

Separately, researchers from the University of Queensland’s Frazer Institute, in collaboration with Children’s Health Queensland, have developed a new genetic testing model for pediatric immune conditions. By introducing in-house pathology tests and streamlining specialist access, the initiative aims to reduce diagnosis waiting times from 12 months to as little as two weeks. This intervention addresses previous inefficiencies, such as the need to ship blood samples overseas or perform duplicate tests, which previously caused delays and emotional strain for families.
